Zipper foot: choose the right type and sew safely

A standard zipper foot stitches beside exposed teeth; an invisible-zipper foot guides the opened coils in dedicated grooves. They are not automatically interchangeable.

Check in this order

  1. 01
    Step 1

Identify the zipper type and consult the machine manual for the prescribed foot, stitch and needle-position range.

  2. 02
    Step 2

Confirm the foot reference and attachment, then switch off and mount it on the side that leaves room beside the zipper teeth.

  3. 03
    Step 3

Turn the handwheel through a complete stitch cycle to check the needle against the foot and zipper area.

  4. 04
    Step 4

Baste or secure the zipper, test a straight stitch on scrap and sew slowly without pulling the fabric or allowing the teeth under the needle.

04

What should restore normal sewing

A standard narrow foot should guide a line close to conventional teeth; a concealed-zipper foot should guide each opened coil in its groove.

Recheck the foot side and permitted needle position before sewing the opposite half.
