01Troubleshooting guide
Sewing machine will not zigzag: is the needle moving sideways?
First separate a setting problem from a stitch-formation problem. If the needle stays centred, check the selected stitch and width. If it moves left and right but the thread catches on only one side, the fault belongs to skipped stitches instead.
02
Most likely causes
- The needle goes up and down but remains in one lateral position.
- The display or selector shows a straight stitch, zero width or twin-needle restriction.
- A straight-stitch foot or plate is fitted even though zigzag needs a wider opening.
03Step
Check in this order
- 01Step 1
Switch off the machine, raise the needle fully and confirm in the exact model manual that the machine and fitted plate support zigzag.
- 02Step 2
Select a basic zigzag stitch and set a visible stitch width above zero; cancel straight-stitch or twin-needle mode if the manual says it limits side movement.
- 03Step 3
Fit the zigzag foot and wide-opening needle plate specified for the model, then remove the fabric and lower the presser foot.
- 04Step 4
Turn the handwheel slowly through several stitches and watch for free side-to-side needle travel before testing at low speed on plain woven scrap.

What should restore normal sewing
The setting is restored when the needle sweeps both sides of the opening without touching and the test seam shows a complete zigzag.
If the needle moves sideways but one side of the zigzag remains unformed, check needle condition, insertion and upper threading as a skipped-stitch fault.
